Indian meal moth mating disruption using CIDETRAK® IMM MESO™ & IMM MEC™ in stored product & PCO environments

BACKGROUND

Trécé’s pheromone and kairomone-based CIDETRAK products have been insect control standards in orchards and vineyards for over 30 years. Yet, CIDETRAK IMM MESO and CIDETRAK IMM MEC are among the first pheromone-based products for Indian meal moth mating disruption in stored products, food processing, retail and other PCO environments. CIDETRAK IMM MESO is a solid dispenser and CIDETRAK IMM MEC is a microencapsulated sprayable liquid. 

Stored product environments are highly complex and present many variables to consider for Indian meal moth management.  Constant immigration from commodity introductions, human interaction, closed or partially closed facilities, and food/product safety are factors that challenge IPM decisions.  

Accordingly, the following questions are the most common questions Trécé receives from customers initiating an IPM program using CIDETRAK IMM MESO, CIDETRAK IMM MEC, and STORGARD® II IMM+4 Traps.

WHY AREN’T INDIAN MEAL MOTHS IN THE STORGARD II IMM+4 TRAP?

After installation of CIDETRAK IMM MESO or application of IMM MEC, the Indian meal moth pheromone will diffuse throughout a stored product facility until it has reached a significant level of air permeation. Indian meal moth adults stop active mate searching and land. These behaviors result in drastic decline in STORGARD II Indian meal moth trap captures. However, the high air permeation of the Indian meal moth pheromone reduces &/or delays mating, creating an over-expenditure of energy, and significantly reduced reproduction.

WHY AM I STILL SEEING INDIAN MEAL MOTH TRAP CAPTURE IN CIDETRAK TREATED AREAS?

  1. There is Indian meal moth infested product close to the STORGARD II IMM+4 trap.

The PCO should investigate what is directly around the trap and remove all infested product/commodity.

  1. Newly introduced infested products.

Every industry seems to have a season when Indian meal moth abundance is very high. Manufacturing, warehousing, and transportation experience higher abundance in August and September. Infestations during these months are often from raw commodities coming into storage in combination with shorter degree days/life cycles.  Retail environments experience higher STORGARD II Indian meal moth trap captures in October – January when more cleaning and restocking occurs. These brief “up-ticks” in trap counts will quickly be suppressed within a week.

  1. It may be time to re-treat with CIDETRAK IMM MESO or IMM MEC.

Sustained Low STORGARD II IMM+4 trap capture numbers across an entirely treated facility may indicate that CIDETRAK IMM MESO dispensers are almost depleted. Consider retreatment and let your STORGARD II IMM+4 trap counts be the indicator.

  1. Occasional trap captures in the STORGARD IMM+4 trap with Indian meal moth mating disruption.

STORGARD II IMM+4 traps use high release of Indian meal moth pheromone to attract the target species. However, despite significant mating disruption, a few adult Indian meal moth males may still find the traps.

HOW LONG SHOULD I MAINTAIN CIDETRAK USE FOR INDIAN MEAL MOTH CONTROL?

CIDETRAK IMM MESO or CIDETRAK IMM MEC mating disruption products, unlike insecticides, should be used as long as control is desired, especially the first 2-3 years.
